Last Days of Summer Tournament Recap
By Tony Law
On August 16, the San Gabriel Tennis Club held its second intra-club tournament of the year, “The Last Days of Summer 2008 Tournament.” It was a very successful tournament that utilized all nine San Gabriel High School tennis courts.
The tournament was coordinated by Tony Law and Amber Marsden, with additional help from fellow SGTC members, Sandy Lee, Steve Marsden, Jada Marsden, Anna Gee, and many more. There were twenty men and sixteen women who signed up for the tournament, in addition to Isabel Sun and Chi Lin who came to support the tournament and took roles as substitute players.
Kenneth and Julie Chan, Vivian Feng, and Glen Huang were not the only new additions to the tournament, but the tournament was conducted with a new tournament format. Sandy Lee recommended the format to create competitive rounds of play with players of similar levels. Tony Law made the men’s match-ups while Sandy and Amber created the women’s lineup. Feedback was very positive about the format which means future tournaments may be run the same way.
After the completion of the tournament, players enjoyed Chinese food from U2 Café and the winners were announced. The prizes were wrapped and included a personal touch by Amber Marsden (she used puffy paints to write “SGTC” on visors for the women & waterbottles for the men”). All the winners really appreciated the prizes, especially Anna Gee, who has already made use of her yellow SGTC visor last week at the courts!. The women winners also received some cute blue and red polka dot or striped bags to carry all their tennis gear in.
First place Women’s Double’s winner was Queta Garcia and first place Men’s Doubles winner was Chuck Woo! Other members who received prizes were Amber Marsden, Anna Gee, Sandy Lee, Isabel Sun, Julie Chan, Venkat, John Machikawa, Martin Law, Charlie Park, and Jeremy Lee.
Overall, the tournament ran very smoothly, was very competitive, and was just plain old fun. The next intra-club tournament will be the annual Turkey Tussle, the biggest tournament of the year, so all members can look for more information about that soon. Feel free to leave comments about what you thought about the tournament, or even email Tony Law at tlaw17@sbcglobal.net to comment about how to make future tournaments even better.

NEWBORNS in May & June:
1. New member Tac Vong & wife, Loan are proud parents of Andrew Roger Vong born on June 26, 1:19 pm, at 6 pounds and 11 ounces. Tac emailed us saying “We never knew this little guy would be so much work, we’re trying to get some sleep between his naps but Andrew makes sure we have plenty to do between his naps. I will bring him out to the club when the weather is more favorable.” Tac & Loan, guess you are now part of the “Tired Parents Club”!
2. Another new member Ben Louie & wife, Lauren, are also proud parents of baby girl, Mallory, born May 28th, at 5:10am. Ben & Lauren admit, “things are pretty crazy here after our daughter was born. We are both pretty tied up handling the new one, but things are well. Would love to be able to get out and play more tennis.”
Yes, it must be hectic for both of you, but in a couple months, taking time out to play tennis, exercise, and have fun will keep you really appreciating your “Before Baby” lifestyle. And in no time, you’ll be bringing baby out to the courts!
Congratulations, GRADUATE!
Our very own Co-social Board Member, EDDIE TRIEU graduated from Cal. Poly Pomona College in June 2008! Please congratulate him when you see him. But right now he is traveling in Taiwan, China, and who knows where for a couple months till September! Eddie, enjoy your freedom before you start working – it’ll be hard to get off for the summers!
Dr. DOMINIQUE YANG, daughter of long time members Angela & Philip Yang, is a Doctor now doing her residency at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Santa Clara, California. Wow, we can all ask her for health advice! Dominique, you have a wonderful & challenging career ahead of you. Congratulations on graduating from Medical School
JADA LEE MARSDEN graduated from Mark Keppel High School, June 2008. She will be a college freshman at Santa Clara University in the Fall. Parents, Sandy Lee & Steve Marsden, will be face the “empty nest” stage. More tennis in the future? Congratulations, Jada! Study hard!
“PORT HUENEME Fun in the Sun” by Amber Marsden
Port Hueneme Fun in the Sun Weekend Getaway 2008
by Amber Marsden
Here are just a few memories of another successful SGTC trip to Port Hueneme, organized by Gail Begerow. Gail was so very generous with her time and energy, working hard to be sure everyone played in matches, rewarded doubles teams who played their best, creatively planned games for after dinner, and surprised members with goodie baskets filled w/ candy, water bottles, and tennis as they arrived at various times on Friday, checking into the lovely Casa Via Mar Inn. That afternoon, John and Suzanne Machikawa, were able to drive down to the port, and grab a bite of fish and chips, as well as enjoy the walk alongside all the shops. It was a relaxing Friday evening for everyone.
After a delicious breakfast, although early for some of us, it was off to the tennis courts. Phillip Yang “served up the most bagels” after breakfast, winning $20 in the Saturday morning scramble play. Other winners were Leslie Mach, Amber Marsden, and Kathy Janisch. Tony Wong really liked the way Gail had the match play set up for the day with members rotating around. Thanks Anna Gee, Angela Yang, and Julia Mo for helping keep track of all the match results, too, along with Gail & her granddaughters, Alison and Meghan, who we all appreciated very much for their graciousness, smiling faces, and hard work helping to make everything run smoothly behind the scenes.
As lunch time came around, most members walked to the nearby Roxbury restaurant. Others ordered their lunch at the Mexican restaurant next door, joining Hector and Queta Garcia. Tony Law and Leslie Mach particularly mentioned loving the Mexican beans, as well as the flan which Queta and Hector graciously offered. Queta translated from Spanish to English many of the dishes on the menu, patiently explaining what sopes are, besides tasting very delicious.
After lunch, our very own former three-time President of SGTC, John Sepulveda (& his wife Alice), who moved to Ventura a couple of years ago, brought a team of John’s Ventura tennis buddies to play w/ SGTC members for some friendly competition.
Amber & Martin just defeated a strong Ventura men’s team. In the next match, John Sepulveda and Ventura teammate, Paul, got some revenge by beating Amber Marsden and Martin Law in straight sets, even though we had some awesome cheering going on by Gloria Estrada. Everyone happily chatted with Ventura player Tim and other Ventura ladies, eventually getting the women’s doubles, and mixed doubles organized late in the afternoon. Thank you Gail, for bringing the much needed, mouth-watering strawberries to snack on that provided us with energy to play tennis all day long. They served as a treat for winning or as a consolation prize. Of course, we’re all winners at Port Hueneme!
Dinner was delicious and just $5! You can’t beat that price! At the night’s festivities, Isabel Sun almost claimed the large pot of money just by yelling at the dice. The dice, as well as several people, may have been confused (and amused) when she yelled “left!” but meant to say “right”. Despite our attempts at strategy, in the end, John Sepulveda was able to hold on to his dollar the longest at one table, making quite a few more (at least $40!). Congrats, John! We’re splitting it 50-50, right? At the other table, Angela Yang took home the big bucks & provided lots of excitement as well. No doubt the lively game of “Left, Right, Center” will hopefully continue as a Port Hueneme tradition, as will Isabel’s fierce competitiveness. We all played “Catch Phrase” after being split into two teams. It was quite a contest, as all the winners got their money back for dinner and some beautifully wrapped door prizes by Gail! See the photos online to see what prizes you missed!
Tony Law and Austin Janisch (son of Kathy & Rick Janisch) had fun playing the Nerf Gun door prize they won. They had an intense battle with the Ball Girls and terrorized members heading to the pool. While some members returned to their rooms for a good night’s rest after a fun day of tennis & festivities, the late night pool-goers were just starting out. Chi Lin especially loved relaxing in the Jacuzzi as did Martin Law, Angela Kwok, and Haruko Hosokawa. Leslie Mach had a fun time blowing up a pool raft which he & Angela won in the first dice rolling game that night.
Sunday morning started off a little slow, but the sun eventually came out and rejuvenated everyone for another couple rounds of tennis. It was a great way to end the weekend.
There were quite a few first-timers to Port Hueneme, including Sandy Lee and her youngest daughter, Jada Marsden, who both had an awesome time! Other members who joined in all the fun – Peter Mo & Terrie Shimada with her guest, Maria,
Another big round of applause goes out to Gail Begerow for once again organizing the entire shindig at the Casa Via Mar Inn and Tennis Club at Port Hueneme. Thanks to Gail and her helpers, granddaughters, Alison and Meghan (aka Ball Girl #1 and #2) – it was another amazingly relaxing, rewarding, and tennis-filled weekend with the San Gabriel Tennis Club. See you again next summer!
Check out the photos online of some of our members at Port Hueneme!
