Rollie Amurao, Love Tourney Coordinator
All SGTC members & IntraClub Love Tourney participants, (Feb 28, 2010) (Email sent to all Members)

Just a follow-up of the Love Tourney.  All those signed up enjoyed a sunny, beautiful day of tennis.  Isabel kept saying “Rain, Rain, Go Away” and it did! 8-)

Of course, there were still puddles on the court, but with a group effort and some brooms,  all worked out fine.
Thank you, Masako Naito, for going over early to open the gates & letting Sandy know about the new parking situation & whether the courts were dry enough to play!!

First obstacle, though, was that we could not pass through a new gate with a punch in code we didn’t know (to unlock the gate that is 1/2 way from the street entrance to the courts).  So we all drove over to the south end of San Gabriel High School to the first light at Grand Street.  Turned right into the parking lot to park and lugged all of the tournament paraphenalia, tables, food, tennis balls, water, soda, ice chests, etc. to the courts – somewhat further away through the campus – just walk toward the back of the campus to the Golf Course past the gym (right and then left).   :-(

You will need to park there next Sunday March 7, until we find out what’s up.  John or Anna will send you news of the parking situation if there is any.  But for now, if San Gabriel High School doesn’t give us a code to get in, then….. just gotta walk further.  We’ve been very fortunate all these years to have such convenience.  (PS the custodian said there was some student driving really fast through the campus and almost hit pedestrians and so they made the gate.  Don’t know the details).  But yeah, for tournaments and scramble morning refreshments, etc.  – humbug.

After the warm up, John Machikawa welcomed everyone and introduced new members Brian Ching and Lisa Szeto and Rollie Amurao, who then took over and coordinated the tourney.  Thanks, Rollie, for setting up all the colorful court and team vs team maps, the partners and line-ups, keeping the scores, etc.  Super job!!  Don’t know what we’d do without your expertise and calm, take charge, flexible attitude.

Martin, thanks very much for getting all the sign ups ahead of time, flyers done, keeping track of everyone and who wanted to partner w/ who, etc.  And Happy Birthday to you!!

Thank you to Angela Kwok for ordering the delicious Italian fare of pizza, 2 kinds of pasta, & salad, getting the cream puffs, fruits, and ice, soda, water, setting everything up.  Eddie, thanks for picking up the food & bringing the heavy big box over to the courts.  Tommy Chu (carried the table all the way back to my van) and thanks to everyone for helping us bring things back ‘n forth and clean up.

Anna Gee, thanks for bringing the morning coffee, pastries, cookies, etc.  And for setting up all the time.  Isabel – thanks for bringing the donuts.  And anyone else who brought things to eat, thank you!  I don’t know who brought what, so..we appreciate it.

Top 3 Winning Couples  (Martin will bring you your prizes next time)

First place couple was Amber & Tony Law, with 23 games won playing 4 rounds against top teams:  Chi Lin/Amy Liang, Isabel Sun/Tac Vong; Rollie/Pete Villalobos; Masako Naito/Hugh Blunden;

Second place2 couples tied with 22 games won:  Brian Ching/Lisa Szeto & Charlie Park/Rosenna Sun
Both teams had to win over teams such as Paul Lin/Pete Villalobos; Gloria Estrada/Takashi Ikushima;  Joe Flores/Hector Garcia; Anna Gee/Tommy Chu and others.

I had not played with many members for awhile – Kathy Janisch & Jeremy Lee were tough competitors, as was couple Hiroko Nozoe & Lee Nguyen. New member, Mike Lu, my very young partner  had to run all over to cover me when I missed the balls that Venkat whizzed by me (with his partner Ed Yue).  Thanks, Mike, for saying ok to play with me.  It was good to see Queta Garcia out playing again!! Wow, I hope I am still playing like you when I am your age!  Go, girl! =D>

Everyone had a fun time and tried their best.  8-)

Plus, every participant got a prize – a T Shirt with San Gabriel Tennis Club logo on the front!!  The board voted to have some t-shirts made.  Please thank Eddie Trieu for  picking out the design & ordering them.  Now, when you wear them,  you can tell whoever asks all about our club.  (for those who left early & did not get one, please see Eddie).

See the attached photo (compliments of Tommy Chu) of some of the club members with their new SGTC t-shirts.  It will be posted on the website later.  Sorry so huge.  First photo w/ Eddie and 2nd without; 3rd photo of winning couple Amber/Tony Law

Also, the 4rth photo attached, is of the last match of the season players (thanks Suzanne for taking the photo) who played on our SGTC 7.0 team captained by our very own SGTC President, John Machikawa.  The match just happened to be at the same time on Sunday  as our Love Tourney (otherwise, they would all be with us).   The team won!!  Great job winning on Sunday, John/Keiko Kagan, Tony Wong/Ruby Villanueva, and Danny Gloria/Lisa Yeung.  Our team ended up being 2nd & won against all the other teams except the #1 team.  Next year!!

(PS I will send the photos separately in another email because I don’t know if it will go through).

To continued tennis fun!  See you at SCRAMBLE Sunday March 7th – check your email if unsure about the rains, or call Sandy 626 416.8727
